Recruitment in Railways is conducted in three ways. Railway recruits its Group D staff through Railway Recruitment Cell. The recruitment of Group D staff like Gangmen, Trackmen, Cabinmen, Porter, Welder, Telecom maintainer, and others are conducted through RRC. The various group C posts are recruited through Railway Recruitment Boards. The popular posts recruited through RRB are Station Master, Goods Guard, Traffic Apprentice, Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Assistant, Junior Engineer, Section Engineer, and others. As earlier discussed Railways is an Engineering Organisation, So the recruitment is categorized into non-technical and Technical Posts Recruitment. Railways have started recruiting the non-technical posts through the non-technical popular categories of posts through the exam called NTPC. Every year, NTPC is conducted both for 10+2 and graduate-level posts. Lakhs of candidates apply for these popular exams.

The top-most Posts of Railways i,e. Class-I officers of Indian Railways is recruited through Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). These posts are recruited through the Civil Services Examination conducted every year.
